چکیده

Economists generally assume, implicitly, that “the return to schooling” is invariant across local labor markets. We demonstrate that this outcome pertains if and only if preferences are homothetic—a special case that seems unlikely. Our theory predicts that returns to education will instead be relatively low in expensive high-amenity locations. Our analysis of U.S. data provides support for this contention; returns to college are especially low in such cities as San Francisco and Seattle. Our findings call into question standard empirical exercises in labor economics which treat the returns to education as a single parameter. JEL: J24, J31, R23.

Understanding Returns to Education When Wages and Prices Vary by Location

In this paper we study whether location-speci...c price variation likely a¤ects statistical inference and theoretical interpretation in the empirical implementation of human capital earnings functions. We demonstrate, in a model of local labor markets, that the “return to schooling” is a constant across locations if and only if preferences are homothetic— a special case that seems unlikely to g...

Assimilation via Prices or Quantities? Sources of Immigrant Earnings Growth in Australia, Canada, and the United States

Using 1980/81 and 1990/91 census data from Australia, Canada, and the United States, we estimate the effects of time in the destination country on male immigrants’ wages, employment and earnings. We find that total earnings assimilation is greatest in the United States and least in Australia. Employment assimilation explains all of the earnings progress experienced by Australian immigrants, whi...

Why Real Interest Rates, Cost of Capital and Price/Earnings Ratios Vary Across Countries

This paper examines how productivity changes a®ect real rates of return and price/earnings ratios in a small open economy. The model provides conditions under which increased productivity in a country's traded goods sector causes prices of non-traded goods to increase relative to the price of traded goods. Under these conditions, real rates of interest decline and the production of certain non-...

Substitution and Superstars Timothy Perri

The existing superstar model (Rosen 1981) does not require imperfect substitutes and explains the convexity of total earnings with respect to talent due to higher output for those with the most talent. We develop a model that explains why per unit earnings (wages or prices) would increase at an increasing rate in talent. Imperfect substitution results due to the probabilistic nature of producti...

Spatial Inequality for Manufacturing Wages in Five African Countries

This paper uses data on individual earnings in manufacturing industry for five African countries in the early 1990s to test whether firms located in the capital city pay higher earnings than do firms located elsewhere, and whether such benefits accrue to all or only certain types of workers. Earnings equations are estimated that take into account worker characteristics (education and tenure) an...
